Watershed Project:OUr change
This semester of chemistry was a time for reflection. My class learned about the effect we have on our environment. specifically our watershed. The city of Escondido did not allow water testing in the Escondido creek. Our mission was to change that and understand why it is so important to test our water. This began with everyone in the class making a job resume in hopes of becoming apart of the teams made to divide work for exhibition. I first started with wanting to join the Elfin Forest team. This team's job was coordinating events with Elfin Forest for our final exhibition. I wrote that as my first choice, but when I went in for the interview with my teacher I said my choice was political team. When I first saw this description for the team, I thought that it was a bit too much for me. I'm not very good with speaking in front of people. Now that I'm at the end of this project, I can say that I could not imagine myself in any other group. The Political teams job is to do the outreach part of the overall project. We go out and interview people who have jobs that protect our water. Also law makers who decide what happens with our water. Our final project was to be something that expressed all the work we did.
The work that my team and I did was interviewing over 10 people who ranged from scientist to park rangers. We learned about the legality of water all over California. We had the opportunity to visit a college lab where we learned about the large amount of specimens that live in our water. With all the knowledge that we gained it was now our time to create a final product for exhibition. We started off with the idea of making a video that goes through all the different interviews we recorded, but we realized that it really wasn't appealing to sit down and watch a boring video. After going through idea's be decided on a magazine. A magazine that had all of our transcribed interviews on each page. We continued making the magazine for a while until we realized that making a newspaper would be more efficient. Our final product ended up being a magazine with pages of small articles of ways we can help our environment. We wanted to make it interactive so I drew pictures for certain pages for kids to draw in. I am very proud of the outcome of this project and can easily say this was my favorite project.
