Mental Health Project.
For the mental health project in humanities we each individually signed up for a mental health disorder to spend the rest of the year creating case reports, short stories, and making interactive activities that teach our peers how this people with this disorder react. The disorder that I researched was Dissociative Identity Disorder or more commonly known as multiple personality disorder. This disorder is caused by childhood trauma before the age of seven. When a child experiences abuse that they cannot subconsciously handle they create alternate personalities to cope with that pain. The signs of altered states of consciousness usually start around the age of nine. This disorder is not considered a real disorder by a lot of positions because of the use of people lying about having this disorder, this causes the disorder to not be talked about very commonly. Considering over 1% of the world is affected by the disorder, it’s important to start talking about it. There is no medication for this medicine and the way that it is worked through is talk therapy.
I have learned through this project that you need a lot of time in order to learn fully about mental disorders. We didn’t have a lot of time on this project and I felt as though it was missing a big part of learning that we should have done. We learned a lot about art, but i wish we could have had more of an organized learning in humanities. I learned that I am not a big fan of the book All The Bright Places. We read it for class and it added nothing new to my life. I didn’t learn anything from it and found it unhealthy for teenagers to be reading a book about codependency. The book had no sub-plot and would bounce directly from plot to plot. I learned a lot about my one disorder, but i wish I could have learned about everyone else’s disorder and how it is caused. I can say that I walked away from this project not learning anything that I already knew.
For our exhibition project my two partners and I created a interactive activity for people to do as we talk about the disorder we researched. We used glow in the dark paint on mask outlines for people to understand how quickly people with Dissociative Identity Disorder can change from one personality to another. For our large scale art project we created a huge poster that we splattered light and dark colors. We then put a white outline of the mask for people to be drawn to. I had a really fun time teaching people about our disorder.
